Folding Falling Forming:
Sculptural glass slumping expanded

24-26 January, Fri/Sat 10-4pm, Sun 10-3 £385, max 4 students

This new course is an extension to the Sculptural Slumping Masterclass and focuses on creating complex glass forms through a sequence of kiln firings that bend the glass in several stages or using one-off set-ups to achieve dramatic shapes. Students will complete two projects over three days using sheet glass and a range of studio props (ceramic and refractory). Participants will make dynamic, flowing sculptures by harnessing the forces of gravity and heat. Primarily using my props, you’ll explore inventive ways to employ ad hoc props to hold or guide glass including wire, kiln furniture and fibre blanket.

You may have taken the Sculptural Slumping course but this course is suitable for new students too as we'll review foundational prop making processes and concepts. A comprehensive visual presentation detailing the making of a selection of Lisa’s previous work, will give a fresh perspective to a range of manipulation techniques. Temperatures and annealing strategies will be discussed. Participants will become more confident devising firing programs that leave room for spontaneous and surprising results.

Students are asked to bring a researched concept (sketches or other media) to discuss for future work. Together we will trouble shoot your ideas, imagining kiln set-up scenarios to achieve your ideas. A handout will summarise the core concepts and firing programs covered in the demos and presentation. All kiln-based materials are provided but students will bring their own glass. Bullseye glass will be used for this course but the methodologies you’ll learn apply to any type of glass.

Cost: £375 per person, includes mould-making materials and firings but students will bring their own glass. We’ll eat on my patio (or dining room) or go to a local cafe (students can also bring a packed lunch). Local accommodation information is available on request. Full payment confirms a place.

Entangled, cast and slumped glass

Sculptural Slumping Masterclass

7-9 March
Fri/Sat 10–4pm, 10–3pm Sun £395, max 4 students

Payment via bank transfer, details on the information and booking form – contact me by email to request a booking form. Courses are held at my home studio in Gomshall, Surrey GU5 9LL.

This kiln-formed glass course is most beneficial for experienced students with a kiln but those newer to glass-making will also find it stimulating and informative. We will explore a variety of ways to control the natural movement of glass in the kiln using props and kiln set-ups. Students will be prompted to investigate their sculptural ideas and why movement is important in their work. We’ll achieve this through a series of demos, visual presentations (explaining my own processes and other artists work) and two making projects.

Working with both float and Bullseye glass, three kiln forming techniques will be explained: ceramic slip cast moulds (like store bought slumpers but your own design!); hardened fibre blanket moulds; carved refractory moulds among others. Extensive course notes with firing programs are provided along with mould making materials. You’ll need to bring a 30 x 40cm 4mm sheet of float glass to the first class and similar sized piece of Bullseye to fuse for the second slump project. These techniques are suitable for both fused and kiln cast work. In a pre-course brief, students will be asked to produce small models before the first session. Details about local accommodation are available on request. For more info please email studio@pettibone.co.uk

Courses are held in the informal surroundings of my workshop in the beautiful Surrey Hills. This creative setting encourages students to get the most out of their attraction to glass and working in small groups means you have plenty of one-to-one assistance.

I enjoy teaching people of all ages and abilities and have been a glass instructor since 2004. I have a BA (Hons) in 3D Design in Glass from UCA Farnham (2005) and in 2010 I obtained a PTLLS certificate to tutor adult education students. In 2018 I gained a MA in Art and Science from Central Saint Martins London. In 2015 I ran the Sculptural Slumping Masterclass at the International Festival of Glass UK and I regularly taught at The Glass Hub in Wiltshire, UK until 2019.

Please email me if you are interested in the course or have questions. I am also happy to plan private sessions for groups of three or more.

Woodland Cyanotype Workshop

30 October, National Trust Leith Hill Place, Surrey RH5 6LU

Cyanotype printing is an early photographic process (John Herschel 1841) producing white imagery on a deep Prussian blue background, magically developed before your eyes in daylight. After a walk in nearby woodlands to collect natural materials, I will guide you through the process to create beautiful blue photo prints to frame, make into cards or bookmarks. No previous experience required. All equipment will be provided as will tea & biscuits and free entry to the house is included. Please park at the Rhododendron Woods car park for a short walk to the House. Normal car park charges apply. NT members park for free.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A offers creative workshops for scientists and engineers. Established by myself, the sessions aim to stimulate creative thinking through making art with themes that often link to participants’ work. Using a range of materials and approaches, these fun workshops are for adults of all abilities – with or without an interest in art – and take place at their institutions or online. The sessions are run by me and artist colleagues with expertise in various mediums such as glass making, cyanotype printing, paper crafts and pinhole camera photography.

I’m keen to develop unique workshops that suit each institution – see examples of previous workshops held at Mullard Space Science Laboratory in Surrey while I was artist in residence there – https://vimeo.com/313881582. I have also led workshops at CERN in Geneva and the European Space Agency in the Netherlands. Please get in touch if you’d like to discuss a project, rates vary but are approximately £200 for a 1.5 hour session including materials and set up time. studio@pettibone.co.uk
