The urgent push into space development within the private sector has stimulated debate about public access to space for non-astronauts and for cultural initiatives. The Moon Gallery Foundation has put art at the centre of establishing a significant place for the humanities by proposing the first lunar gallery, anticipated by 2025. As a preliminary test mission, they will be sending the work of 64 artists to the International Space Station in early 2022. The foundational team will discuss their motives, ambitions and planning for their pioneering projects. The talks will be followed by a Q&A session at the end. Mayes Creative: Starlight Virtual Arts-Science Residency

Invited speaker, discussing how astronomy and stargazing have influenced my practice

1 December – 4 March 2021
Watching the Sun Residency, a group residency with Mayes Creative in Cornwall, an astronomy based creative virtual residency with a focus on the sun. I turned to the eternal movement of the sun across our landscape. Light was captured by Neolithic people through momentary alignments with stone formations marking the equinoxes and solstices. More than primitive clocks, they mark our solar relationship with the universe - the earth spins, the sun spins, the solar system sweeps through the Milky Way. Ancient peoples documented these movements in symbolic spirals and designs carved into rock standing stones such as New Grange in Ireland. The sun is a constant reminder that the universe is never still and it’s light gives us life and purpose. Using cyanotype images of sites like Chun Quoit in Cornwall and fictional handmade universes, I constructed a series of paper sculptures bound by luminous thread and hung to perpetually rotate around each other (approx 17 cm each). Titled Alignment, a short video of the installation is here https://vimeo.com/520070598

Art of Science with Art@CMS CERN
Sofia Tech Park
Sofia, Bulgaria
As alumni and current students of CSM Art & Science involved with Art@CMS CERN, I curated and installed (with much help from facilities staff) an exhibition at Sophia’s Tech Park to celebrate Bulgaria’s 20 years at CERN. Launched by our host physicist Leandar Litov (who works on the CMS experiment at CERN) the event opened with comments from Fabiola Gianotti, director general of CERN. This group of artworks has toured to CERN (June 2019) and Ghent University in Belgium (July 2019) with a final visit to Geneva in September for CERN Open Day 2019. CSM Art & Science has been involved with Michael Hoch’s Art@CMS program since 2016 when he hosted my MA group’s visits at CERN. We responded to our experiences there with the exhibition Entangled: CSM x CMS at Four Corners Gallery, London in June 2016. Several alumni artworks are in the Sofia show including two of my screen prints and four photographs. Video walk through here.

Exploring the benefits of art/science relationships, this event discusses Lisa Pettibone’s year-long residency at Mullard Space Science Laboratory (UCL) along with collaborator Dr Tom Kitching, science lead on MSSL’s Euclid Mission. Complementing the concurrent exhibition at Lumen Crypt Gallery, London, a short film will be premiered documenting her extensive access to the lab, aesthetic responses that influence her work and creative workshops with MSSL staff. Ben Murray (Kings College London and co-director of Phenotypica) will discuss the unique nature of interdisciplinary collaborations and their potential effect on wider culture. Lumen Studios London (art/science collective) will chair the evening, concluding with a Q&A panel discussion. Drinks and snacks will be served after the film at 7.15pm.

National Trust commission at Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire
Lacock Abbey is the home of pioneer photographer Henry Fox Talbot. I completed two commissions for their programme ‘Capturing the Light’ which encourages visitors to experience the gardens Talbot used in his work. Negative Window relates to his first photographic negatives and Optical Tree is an interactive piece combining Talbots use of optical devices and his love of exotic trees. The work is on general view for two years from June 2012. See my Facebook page for images: www.facebook.com/pettiboneart www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock
